Students are usually really telling of the lastest music and fashion trends that would otherwise go completely unnoticed by me. A few weeks ago, I caught an episode of Glee on TV– it was the Ricky Martin episode (“The Spanish Teacher”), and it was this clip in particular that inspired me to do a lesson over something my students have been dying to talk about:
Botas picudas!
My hispanic students have been OBSESSED with “tribal,” a mix of cumbia/electronic music popular throughout Texas. Here’s a really popular song (though my students claim to be “over it” already) by DJ Erick Rincón called “Inténtalo”:
The boots are insane! Students at my school actually wear these! So we took a day to talk about them. Here’s a documentary I found on YouTube:
I cut out a few parts, but my students were pretty interested throughout. We then had a discussion about las botas picudas and how trends in music inspire fashion (in retrospect, I should’ve used wiffiti.com). Overall, easy and informative day with the students.
Ahhhhh!!! THIS IS AMAZING!!! I love it! Off to write a lesson plan now…you’re awesome!!
Thank you!

I’ve been listening to that song (Intentolo) a lot lately too.
Just found your blog, some good ideas here. Will have to check more of it out later.
Wow, I LOVE your site! So many great things going on! Thank you for finding me, as I’m now so happy to have found you too!
This is cool, thanks for sharing!
I really want a pair of botas picudas to start wearing at the end of every school year. But I live in Ohio and nobody sells these.
Have you seen these at any stores in Texas? I would GLADLY send you money to send me a pair.
Yes, we do have them here in Texas! I’ve asked my students (I have some who actually wear them to school!), and they’ve pointed me towards a couple of places. They’ve also told me that the boots average around $200 a pair, so that’s something to keep in mind, but if you’d like for me to find out more for you, just let me know!
If you watch the vice mag documentary you will see you need to make your own.
