Students are usually really telling of the lastest music and fashion trends that would otherwise go completely unnoticed by me. A few weeks ago, I caught an episode of Glee on TV– it was the Ricky Martin episode (“The Spanish Teacher”), and it was this clip in particular that inspired me to do a lesson over something my students have been dying to talk about:
Botas picudas!
My hispanic students have been OBSESSED with “tribal,” a mix of cumbia/electronic music popular throughout Texas. Here’s a really popular song (though my students claim to be “over it” already) by DJ Erick Rincón called “Inténtalo”:
The boots are insane! Students at my school actually wear these! So we took a day to talk about them. Here’s a documentary I found on YouTube:
I cut out a few parts, but my students were pretty interested throughout. We then had a discussion about las botas picudas and how trends in music inspire fashion (in retrospect, I should’ve used wiffiti.com). Overall, easy and informative day with the students.
